Velma Stout was the youngest child of Virgil Stewart Stout & Sarah Miller Stout. Orphaned at age 12, she was taken in by her sister, Myrtie Stout Thompson, who was 20 years her senior. Miss Stout became a kindergarten/1st grade teacher and taught several generations of students in Maude, Texas from the early 1930s until the late 1970s.

"Aunt Vel" spent several weeks each summer in Cotton Valley, Louisiana at the home of Louise Thompson Smith. There she entertained many visiting greatnieces and greatnephews with hilarious tales of her classroom experiences.

Following retirement from teaching, she resided with and cared for her elder sister Jewell Kennedy in Sulpher Springs, Texas. Velma relocated to Minden, Louisiana in her final years to again be near members of the Thompson family.
