Son of Andrew E. McWilliams (1786-1859) & Sarah Ann McGowan (1784-1876);The extended McWilliams family of Andrew & Sarah came to Charleston, SC in 1801 aboard the ship "Sallie" from Larne, Co. Antrim, Ireland. They descended from a long line of proud Highlander Scots. AE & SA McWilliams were parents to "seven sons/two daughters", all but their youngest son were born at Laurens Co., SC. They lived at SC until 1828 2 when AE & SA McWilliams
moved briefly to DeKalb Co., GA be they moved down to "Flat Shoals", Meriwether Co., GA. By that time, several of the adult children had already married & moved to AL, LA, TX & GA.

"A leading banker (Board of Directors- Commercial National Bank) at the time of his death. He played a role in the first Shreveport Fire Company (1852), early shipping & real estate. His only grandson John McWilliams Ford (1880-1965) was a Mayor of Shreveport (1916-1922) & active in political affairs thru-out his life. JG McWilliams left an estate of over $100,000 at death - most to his grandson JM Ford of whom he was very proud."
