Vera Abbott Redding (1904 - 2011)

Vera "Sissy" Abbott Redding, 107, left us to go to her heavenly home with Jesus on Sunday, July 31, 2011. Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery, followed by a reception at Smithfield Church of Christ.

Vera was born in Princeton to Gilly and Lillie Abbott on Jan. 14, 1904. Raised on a farm, she left Princeton and moved to Smithfield with her mother and brother. She married Bernice C. Redding. Vera attended Commerce Teachers College near Princeton, and she first taught at the Old Bedford School House. She then taught at Birdville High School before retiring. She was very active in her church, Smithfield Church of Christ. Vera wrote two books later in life, "The Ups and Downs of a Public School Teacher" and "Bozo, The Uncrowned King," which was about her boxer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, B.C.

Survivors: Nephews, Tommy Abbott, M.D., and wife, Pearle, Philip Abbott, M.D., and wife, Arvetta; great-nephews, Tommy Abbott Jr. and Philip Abbott Jr.; great-nieces, Melody Turner and husband, Mike, and Ann Echols and husband, Steve, great-great-nephews, Michael Turner and Garrett Echols; great-great-nieces, Michele-Turner, Alexis Abbott and Jane Echols; and many special friends.
