Roman R. Macijeski, 92, Wild Rose, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Rosemore Retirement Village.

Roman was born Sept. 27, 1918, in the town of Rose, Waushara County, to the late Phil and Francis Macijeski.

Roman enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 before the draft began, and saw action in the Pacific Theatre and received the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was a member of the Wild Rose American Legion Post No. 370.

Returning to the town of Rose after the war, Roman continued to farm with his brothers, Dan and John, on the family farm.

He married Helen Warzynski Hudziak on Feb. 14, 1961, in Heffron. She preceded him in death Aug. 19, 2010. In their nearly 50 years of marriage, they took many trips together to Las Vegas, Hawaii, Florida and Jamaica.

Later in life, Roman worked at the lumberyard in Wild Rose. He enjoyed building small items for his family and own use, many of which were built to stand the test of time.

He was active with his church, originally St. John the Baptist in Heffron, now St. Maximillian Kolbe in southeast Portage County. For many years, he called the people to worship by ringing the bell before Sunday Mass began.

Roman was a patient, gentle man, who loved spending time with his family. Dzia-dzia will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his family, Norman (Jeannette) Hudziak, Wild Rose, Sharon Lorenz, Wild Rose, and Lee Ann (Thomas) Lella, Wausau; great-grandchildren, Rebecca (Taj) Schumacher, Wautoma, and Michael Lella, Wausau; and two great-great-grandchildren, Dexter and Amara Schumacher, Wautoma. He is further survived by his brother, Dan (Bertha) Macijeski, Wild Rose; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass for Roman will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at 11 a.m., at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, town of Lanark, with the Rev. Dan Farley presiding. The visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Maple Crest Funeral Home in Waupaca from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., and again Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery in Heffron, with full military honors.
