Phoebe A. English (Phebe according to her family Bible) was born May 27, 1811. On April 6, 1828 Phoebe joined the First Baptist Church of Christ in Sodus, Wayne County, New York. Phoebe and Luther Sherman were married by Rev. Martin at Sodus in April 1828, and they had ten children: George N., John, Charles, Elizabeth Ann, Luther Jr., Lewis, Esther A., M.V., Amanda Charlotte and Jalana "Lanie". Sometime after January 1, 1832, the family moved west to Erie County, Pennsylvania. Phoebe died August 27, 1892 at the age of eighty one and was buried in the Waterford Cemetery next to her husband.
