Husband of the last surviving Confederate widow, Ms. Alberta Martin. William Martin joined the 4th Alabama Infantry, Company K in May of 1864. He fought in the Howlett House skirmish near Richmond, VA & was later hospitalized with a case of Rubella. Private Martin met Alberta Stewart, and after a very short courtship, he asked Ms. Stewart's father for her hand in marriage. Although there was 60 years difference between the two, they got married on Saturday, December 10, 1927 at the courthouse in Andalusia, Alabama. Both Alberta & William had children from previous marriages, but the two had a baby boy together named Willie. Ms. Martin later said that their marriage wasn't based on "the type of love found between two young people, but on mutual respect and need." They were only married for about 4 & a half years before Pvt. Martin's death.
