Joseph A. Bakker
Joseph A. Bakker, 90, a longtime member of the military, died at his home Sunday afternoon after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Holland and Bonine Funeral chapel. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery at Fort Benton.
He was born May 3, 1900, in Chicago, Illinois. He married Ida Mona Dubois in Glasgow on Oct. 26, 1926.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy after serving in World War I from 1916 to 1919. During his military service he served aboard the USS Alabama, USS Wyoming, USS Conestoga, and the USS Nonpariel. After his discharge he was associated with the military on and off for the next 20 years.
He was a member of the Coast Guard, and then served in the Merchant Marines until his retirement in 1959. He lived for many years in Washington until moving to Havre in June 1990.
Survivors include children, Gertrude Melton and Raymond Bakker, of Yakima, Wash; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Bakker, of Havre; a brother, Paul Bakker of Lynn Crest, Fla.; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and three sons.
