"Emma was born in Prairie City, Grant County, Ore., on Aug. 28, 1870 and was christened Emma Caroline Newman. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Newman." [John Wesley Newman and Jane Bennett] "She was fifth down the line of nine children and second oldest of four girls. The Newman family bent an ear to the urgings of Emma's grandfather, William Bennett, who was living in Prescott, and came to Arizona in two covered wagons, landing at Prescott in 1877. That was her home for four years and where she completed her schooling by the age of 11. When her father died in 1881, Mrs. Newman brought her family to Flagstaff, a small but bustling logging settlement. Emma remained in school at Prescott but that spring rejoined her family here. This has been her home since. ...... Mrs. Leslie's sisters and brothers are no longer living, and neither are her three children born during the first of her two marriages. To her first husband, Joseph Dent, to whom she was married seven years, she bore two sons and a daughter." [Joseph Dent and Emma were married 28 Aug 1890 in Flagstaff, Arizona. They obtained a divorce about 7 years later. Joseph and at least one of his sons were sheep ranchers. He was born in England 20 July 1860 and died in Flagstaff, Arizona on 26 July 1927. Their children were: Thomas Deal (d. in Flagstaff in 1927), Nora Dent (d. 1936) and George Gibson Dent (d. 01 Feb 1952 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon)] "Her second marriage lasted 54 years. Her husband was the late Frank Leslie, a longtime Flagstaff barber, Leslie died July 05, 1953. ..... An expert with the sewing machine, she once contributed to the family income by selling clothing she made. ....."
