Louis Johnson was the 5th and last child of William Johnson and Caroline Steele. He married Melissa Carter around 1890. Louis and Melissa lived in Okaloosa County (then Walton County) around Horsehead Creek. Caroline, Louis's mother, and William, Louis's brother, lived nearby.

In October 1892, Louis's brother, William, was shot by Jason Steele due to a land dispute involving Louis and William's mother, Caroline. William died from the injury in early November 1892. Louis was present at the shooting and testified in the ensuing murder trial.

Louis's father died young. Louis was primarily raised by his mother, Caroline.

Louis received a land grant in 1896, but died days later.
