ST. ELMO — Delores May Gillespie, 87, of St. Elmo passed away at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday Aug. 3, 2011, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham, with her family near after a long struggle with sickness.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, St. Elmo, with Pee Wee Denton of New Horizons Non-Denominational Church, St. Elmo, officiating. Committal burial services will immediately follow the funeral services in Maplewood Cemetery, St. Elmo. Visitation for family and friends will be from noon to 3 p.m. today at the church. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, 215 N. Walnut St., or Loretta's Kitchen, c/o Friendship Manor, St. Elmo, IL 62458 and/or the donor's choice. Kull Funeral Home, St. Elmo, is in charge of arrangements.

Delores May Gillespie was born Sept. 30, 1923, at home in Vandalia, the first sibling into a family of four, the daughter of Fred and Laura Ledbetter-Smith. She married Forrest Eugene "Bud" Gillespie on June 29, 1941, in First United Methodist Church, St. Elmo. Bud preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1996.

Delores was born, raised, educated and worked in the St. Elmo area her entire life. Delores kept very busy; she was a homemaker for many years. But she had other jobs and enjoyments. In the early years of her marriage, besides raising a family, she was the bookkeeper for the family automotive service station business, where she worked alongside her late husband.

Delores was later employed by St. Elmo School District 202, where she was the cook at St. Elmo Grade School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, which was a very important part of her life, serving with numerous organizations within the church, as well as other community organizations that include Century Culture Club and Caring & Sharing at Christmas.

In her passing, Delores leaves behind her three sons, Ricke (wife, Terri) Gillespie of St. Elmo, Danny (wife, Joan) Gillespie of Decatur and Ronnie (wife, Lois) Gillespie of Forsyth; daughter, Sandra (husband, Dave Jr.) Hill of St. Elmo; brother, Kaye Smith of St. Elmo; two sisters, Mary Olson of St. Elmo and Betty Brubaker of Olathe, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends in the area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Smith and Laura Ledbetter-Smith; husband, Forrest Eugene "Bud" Gillespie; daughter, Sheila Kay Gillespie in her infancy in 1942; brothers-in-law, Robert Olson and Harold Brubaker; and sister-in-law, Pat Rhodes-Smith.
