The family first put down roots in Jones Prairie where they lived for several years. Mattie was soon joined by a new baby brother, Jimmy, and the family began to prosper on their new ranch. Sadly, when Mattie was just five years old, her mother died and was buried at the Little River Baptist Church at Jones Prairie. That left three small children at home with only then father to look after them. Baby Jimmy went home with his Aunt Susie Little until he was old enough to come back home with his father and sister. Mattie was old enough for her father to look after her.
When Mattie was twenty-five years old, she married Charles A. Pyburn on May 8, 1901. Charlie was a native of Albany, Indiana, born there on September 22, 1867. Mattie and Charlie had four children.
