Zolton Ferency was born to a Hungarian-American family in Detroit. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was an attorney; professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University; member of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, Ingham County Commissioner, and member of East Lansing City Council at the time of his death.

Zolton was a widely recognized and colorful statewide political figure for many years. He was State Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party from 1963 to 1968, when he was ousted over his opposition to the Vietnam War. He helped found the Human Rights Party.

Though never elected statewide, he was often a candidate: for Governor of Michigan in 1966, 1970, 1974, 1978, and 1982, and for Justice of the Michigan State Supreme Court in 1972, 1976, and 1986. He also sought election to the Michigan State Senate, 24th District, in 1990.
