Mrs. Mary Lou Thomas Daniels was born to Alfred and Lucinda Frazier Thomas in Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia. Over 100 years later we still remember and celebrate her life. She married Pvt. Charlie Moses Daniels and lived in East Albany, Georgia and other sections of town before buying a home and land on a dirt street just outside the city limits sign at 1610 River Road (now Martin Luther King Jr. Dr,}. They raised 10 plus children. Henrietta, Oscar, Charlie Jr., Clarence, Nathaniel, Alfred, Rebecca, Isaiah, Aqullia and Willie. Mary Daniels was a faithful member of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church on the Sylvester Highway in East Albany, Georgia where Rev. W.W.Woodson was pastor. She would have prayer meetings in her home between her 1st and 3rd meeting Sundays. She also was a respected member of the local Eastern Star and would enjoy entertaining the sisters in their colorful outfits for meetings and social gatherings. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy were three people she held in high regards to bring Black America up to where they should be. In her home she proudly hung their pictures on her wall until she passed away. When Dr. King came to Albany, Georgia as a part of The Albany Movement, she was there to let her voice be heard. "Big Mama" as she was known to the grandchildren which she had many, was a hardworking praying woman who took things as they were and added her own touch or commentary. Didnt much get pass her eyes or ears. When visiting her home everyone were welcomed as long as you didnt start no mess. She believed in keeping home and everything else in order. "Cousin Mutt" as she was sometimes called, loved her family and the community at large in South Albany and the Coachman Park area especially. Fishing was a passion that she enjoyed. Going down to the Flint River which was two streets over, she would catch enough "Cats, Brims and Carps" to feed the extended family and beyond. She enjoyed her Pecan Grove and growing a beautiful garden. And talking about sewing, Mary Lou would sit for hours "pieceing together patches of cloth". She made so many beautiful spreads and quilts. During the winter months no one had to go to bed cold because quilts she had. The cooking was another speciality but there were so many things she did well. She had to slip away the 23rd of February 1972, but she left behind sons and daughters loved ones and friends who will carry on the legacy built in the lives of those she touched. Mrs. Mary Lou Daniels was blessed among women. May Heaven smile upon you today. That's what I'm talkin bout. Amen!
