Andrew Mitchell Poage was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, the son of John Poage Jr. and Matha Jane Mitchell. He migrated to Fort Hempstead (about a mile south of present day Franklin, Missouri) either when his older brother Robert did in 1807, or possibly a few years after.
In 1821 he moved to the newly formed Ray County, Missouri. It was here he married Nancy Groom, daughter of Abraham Groom and Jane Crawford. The wedding took place on July 29, 1822. Colonel John Thornton performed the service. Andrew received land grants in June and July of 1824 in Clay County for a total of 240 acres to the northwest of the town of Liberty. It was here he built a two room log home for his family. He also donated a portion of land for a cemetery the same year, known as Little Shoal Cemetery. They resided at this location for about 10 years. The property was then sold to Thomas Arnold. The Arnold family added a two story brick Gothic Revival addition to the house in 1870. The Poage-Arnold house, also known as Three Gables, stands today as the oldest home in Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1833 Andrew began acquiring land in the newly formed Clinton County, to the north. He shortly afterward moved his growing family there, and became one of the early settlers of Atchison Township. Over a number of years, he acquired as much as 1600 acres of grassland located between the town of Gower and Plattsburg, and along the Castille Creek. He is listed as one of only 34 people to cast a vote in the first election held in the county in August of 1833.
Andrew passed away in 1866, and he was buried in a small family plot known as "Poage Cemetery". In his will he left most of his land to his sons, and youngest daughter. Much of it ended up in the possession of Andrew's twin sons David R. P. "Dave" and William M. "Dallas" or "Dal" Poage, who maintained it until their deaths.
