Thomasville - John Carroll Pharis Sr., 56, of 709 Field St. died March 13, 2000, at his residence.
He was born June 30, 1943, in Key West, Fla., a son of John Thomas and Ruth Lucille Surratt Pharis. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He was employed with Thomas Built Buses Inc., retiring after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Davidson County Sheriff Department's Posse, a former member of Pilot Lions Club and was active in the Disabled American Veterans. He was a charter member of Hillside Park Baptist Church and the Young Adult Sunday School Class. On April 26, 1968, he married Jewel Ward Jones, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Tammy) McKinney Jr. of Denton; a son, John C. Pharis Jr. and his wife, Kerry, of Archdale; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Butch (Carolyn) Adams of Thomasville and Mrs. Terry (Shirley) Setliff of Lexington; a stepson, Larry Jones and his wife, Wanda, of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Steve (Darlene) Matekovich of Destin, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Amber and Shawn McKinney, Carla Gregory, Lisa Coble, Cindy Smith, Misty Bivens, Terri Lynn Baxley and T.J. Setliff; and two great-grandchildren, Rebekah Smith and Sarah Baxley.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Hillside Park Baptist Church by the Rev. John Wheeles and the Rev. Doug Adams. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons until the service hour. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 211 Warner St.

Members of Davidson County Sheriff's Posse will serve as active and honorary pallbearers and should meet at 3:30 p.m. at the church.
