Sherrill Weaver was named in honor of the maiden surnames of his grandmothers. He is found in the 1850 census in Indiana where his father is listed as a river trader. In 1860 the family was living in San Francisco , CA. He tried his hand at farming in California and was appointed a postmaster for a short time. As recorded in the 1880 federal census he and his wife lived in Bodie, Mono County, California & his profession is listed as mine superintendent. In that same year he led a citizen's group against the formation of a Bodie National Guard Company because they thought that it was composed of a rough group of miners. The citizens group prevailed. He was a member of the Masons in Bodie as late as 1882. His father built and opened a successful mill, The Humbolt, in the Del Monte Canyon near Aurora, NV from 1880-1882. He oversaw its completion and looked after other mining interests. By the mid 1880s he left the area for Oregon. In 1887 Sherrill promoted the purchase & reorganization of the Nelson Placer Mine in Baker, OR. for $300,000.00 with a group of investors. Once his control was established, he acted as Superintendent. A family story recounts that he would bet acquaintances that he could beat them to Portland from Mount Hood. He was able to do so by filling his car with river rock. By loading the auto close to the ground his car flew down the mountain curves lower to the road and he was less apt to tip over. The Multnomah County vehicle records show him owning both Buicks and Pierce Arrows between 1914 and 1929. After his wife's death he lived with his daughters Edith McCutchan & Lillian Smith. His death was announced in the Oct. 25th issue of the Oregonian, page 14.
