Obituary, Modesto [CA] Bee, 29 Jul 2011:

James (Jim) Abbey - born Aug. 16, 1923 passed away July 24, 2011 of natural causes. Jim was born to Bert and Haltie Lewis Abbey in Winters, Ca. At age 3 he moved to Modesto. He attended Capitol, John Muir, Roosevelt, and Modesto High School. He played basketball, baseball, and football all 4 years in high school. During high school Jim worked at Conrad & Rowe Body Shop. Upon graduating Jim worked at Pacific Bridges in Alameda as a shell welder.

In May 1942 Jim was drafted to Fort Ord Basic Training as a motor mechanic. He proudly served in Pearl Harbor, Australia, and New Caledonia as a replacement soldier in the "Americal Division", Guadalcanal, Solomon and Fiji Islands, Bougainville, Cebu, Leyte, Negros, and Yokohama. He was discharged Dec. 2, 1945 as a Master Sergeant with a victory medal, good conduct medal, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze star, and an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.

When returning home Jim farmed and raised beef cattle. Soon farming became a side job as he owned and operated Abbey's Body Shop and Abbey's Restaurant/Fountain in Turlock.

May of 1948 he married Josephine Parr and they resided in Modesto while raising their 1 daughter, Sandra. Jim continued farming while working as a sub contractor, building homes in the College area of Modesto.

In 1953 Jim began his 40-year career as a dedicated and loyal Plant Manager of Stanislaus Food Products in Modesto. Farming continued while working at Stanislaus Foods. At the age of 70 Jim retired from Stanislaus Foods and continued farming.

Post retirement Jim spent farming and enjoying family and friends. Jim and Josephine were happily married 54 years until her death in 1996. Jim was a faithful fan and proud grandpa who would always be seen at his grandsons many baseball and basketball games, following them thru college.

Jim is survived by his daughter Sandra (Gary) Fromm, grandson Jereme Fromm and grandson Brandon (Tara) Fromm.

Hard working and humble, he was an amazing man! He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
