Long time Alaska resident Esther Irene George, 81, died peacefully in her sleep on July 17, 2011 with family by her side at Providence Horizon House in Anchorage. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Holy Family Cathedral on July 26th, preceded by time for prayerful remembrance and followed by a reception at the church. Father Steven Moore officiated.

Esther was born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 13, 1930 and grew up as an adventurous spirit in a large loving Southern family in Eutauville, South Carolina where she graduated from high school. At the tender age of 18, Esther met and fell in love with a young man in the Navy named Eugene Joseph George. They were married November 13, 1948 and enjoyed 57 years together traveling and raising their family. In 1976, the family drove from Oregon to Alaska caravan style and settled in Anchorage. Esther worked many years for the Municipality of Anchorage. First with Parks and Recreation and eventually retiring from ATU. Soon after, she and Gene started their RV trips. They traveled throughout the states from Alaska to Maine visiting family and friends, touring many National Parks and testing the best ice cream shops along the way. Esther embraced and shared her Alaskan life with her family both near and far. Many road trips were spent fishing and clamming in the Kenai area or dipnetting on the Copper River and showing off McKinley to her relatives from outside. Some of Esther's biggest adventures were shared with friends from the Alaska Prospectors Club where she not only climbed the mountains in Alaska but also traveled to places such as Nepal spending time hiking the Himalayas with her Sherpas. She also looked forward to the Nordic Ski Club's annual trip to Grandview Glacier. Esther's religious travels led her on pilgrimages to Jeruselum, Medjigoria, and Rome where her prized picture is one of herself holding hands with Pope John Paul II, who she affectionately referred to as JP2. St. Patrick's Catholic Church was her parrish for over 30 years where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She attended many daily masses and was involved in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas as well as other volunteers groups. Esther's favorite times were spent with family celebrating the holidays and playing cards. She was known to be a fun pinnocle player, usually hinting to her playing partners what cards she needed. Lovingly referred to as "Gramma G" by her family, she will be remembered as a gentle soul who gave generously of herself to family and friends, modeled strong values, and wrote everything down so she wouldn't forget. Her gentle ways and adventurous spirit will live on in our hearts forever. Mrs. George was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Gene George.

She is survived by her five children. John George and daughter-in-law Marrily, Margo Pichler and son-in-law Ron. Sons Dan George and Gary George, and daughter Linda Bowers. Grandchildren Jeremy (Marlea) George, Amanda George, Nick George, Katrina (Tim) Cronin. Kyle, Kara, and Heidi Pichler, Sarah (Mingo) Ramirez and Jesse George. Great granddaughters Marlaina, Mara, Marissa George and great grandson John Rodriguez. Brother and sister-in-law Mike and Cheryl George. She is also survived by her siblings Lee, Charlotte, Curtis, and Ellie along with many nieces, nephews and their families in Alaska and other states. As per Esther's wishes, she was buried alongside her husband Gene at Ft. Richardson National Cemetery. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
