Son of Paul Collins Abney and Dorothy Rutherford. A misspelling of the name Rutherford down the line 3 generations resulted in the erroneous belief that his middle name was Releford. In actuality, it is Rutherford, his mother Dorothy's maiden name. The Texas spelling is Relephard.

Paul Collins moved his family to Warren Co., Mississippi just after statehood in 1819-1820. Sons Joseph Duncan and Robert R. received land patents in Hinds Co. on acreage that would later become a Battlefield during the Civil War.

Robert R. moved his family from Champion Hill/Edwards, Hinds County, MS to Jasper County, MS just after the 1833 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek with a 1835 land patent when Jasper became a Mississippi county thus becoming a pioneer family of both Hinds and Jasper Counties.

In poor health R.R. and Mary Ann moved to Pearl River County around 1870-72 to live with their son, Henry Clay, a Civil War doctor.
