A nicheside memorial service will be held for Mary Lou Munyon, 70, of North Bend, at noon Thursday, Aug. 11, at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, 63060 Millington Frontage Road in Coos Bay, with pastor Ray Pounds presiding. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Coos Bay Eagles Lodge after the service to celebrate the life of Mary Lou. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.

Mary Lou was born on Jan. 11, 1941, in Cross Plains, Texas, to Carl Nelson and Maggie (Grissom) Nelson. She passed from this earth on Aug. 7, 2011, at her home in North Bend with her family by her side. She had valiantly fought cancer for the past four years.

In 1953, Mary Lou moved with her family to Coos Bay. After graduating from Marshfield High School, Class of 1959, she worked at ATT as a telephone operator. In 1961 she married Don Smith and over the next seven years had three sons.

Later, as a single mother, she was one of the first women hired to work in the Weyerhauser sawmill. While working an extremely difficult and challenging job, she met and fell in love with her co-worker, Tom Munyon. Tom had custody of his five children. Mary Lou and Tom would marry in October 1975.

The combined household of eight children, seven in high school simultaneously, kept Mary Lou quite busy. In addition to the normal responsibilities of parenting such a large family she also was involved in the Sandpipers Baton Corp, Sweet Adelines, co-president of the North Bend High School Quarterback Club with her husband Tom, the Miss Coos County Pageant, the Red Hat Society and an active member of the Coos Bay Eagles.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Munyon of North Bend; father, Carl Nelson of Coos Bay; children, Ron Munyon of Hillard, Wash., Debbie Gray of North Bend, Mark Smith of Dallas, Texas, Tom Munyon Jr. of Auburn, Wash., Donna Hyman of Mead, Wash., Dana Bergstrom of Mead, Wash., and Kyle Smith of Coos Bay; sister, Jean Wilson of Coos Bay; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her mother, Maggie Nelson, and her brother, Grady Nelson.

Cremated: Ashes at Sunset Memorial Park, Coos Bay, Oregon.
