OBIT--Riley Barrett, 30 years old, veteran of the World War (I), shot and killed himself yesterday afternoon in the basement of his home at 100 Est Moore Street, Independence, Missouri, which he had fitted up a week ago when he was married. Barrett had been acting odd, according to Mrs. Hattie Fowler, his mother-in-law, who had been visiting the newly married couple. Sunday night during a prayer meeting, Riley alarmed his wife and her mother by rising and testifying that "There is a black shadow hanging over me."
Mrs. Barrett and her mother had planned a shopping trip to Kansas City yesterday morning. Fearful that Barrett was unstable, Mrs. Fowler made a search of the house and buried all the revolver cartridges she could fine. She overlooked a 38-caliber revolver.
Riley escorted his wife and Mrs. Fowler to the street car at 3 o'clock and kissed them goodby.
His body was found in the basement by two of his three brothers after the women returned home from shopping to find the door locked. The revolver was found near the body.
Riley was employed by the Standard Oil Company. He came to Independence, Missouri six months ago from Iowa.
