Chico Enterprise Record, January 21, 1998: "Jack Coon. Durham--A funeral for Jack Anderson Coon, 78, of Durham will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. He died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his home. Coon was born Sept. 17, 1919, to Allie and Irene Coon in Durham. He attended schools in Chico and graduated from Chico High School in 1939. He attended San Jose State University for two years. In December of 1941, Coon joined the Navy. He served on a tanker, the USS Neches, which supplied fuel to aircraft carriers. He served in the Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean until 1945. He also served during the Korean War from 1950-52.

"On June 27, 1943, Coon married Miriam Fay Huntington in Reno, Nev. In 1946 they moved to Durham and lived on the same property where he was born. Coon formed a partnership with his brother and took over the operation of a grain cleaning and storage warehouse in Chico. The business was called Coon Almond Shelling and Seed Cleaning Plant. He retired in 1967. Coon liked traveling and visited 36 countries throughout the world. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and raising tulips. He especially loved the family dogs. He was an active member of the Durham American Legion Post 673. Coon is survived by his wife, Miriam."
