Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 51st Indiana Volunteer Infantry, then finally as Colonel and commander of the 83rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. At the June 27, 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia he was severely wounded, and lost his left arm due to those wounds. He was brevetted both Brigadier General, US Volunteers and Major General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct during the war, and particularly in the battles of Chattanooga, Resaca and Kennesaw". After the war he served as United States Marshal for the District of Indiana from 1865 to 1879.
