Nancy was born in Lafayette, Indiana to Worth LeRoy and Lillie Mae (Hilton) Young but moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1927 when her father was transferred there by his employer the Monon Railroad. She graduated from Bloomington High School in 1935 and then from Indiana University in 1939, being the first of her family to go to college.

She married Lester V. Moore on February 12, 1944 prior to his going overseas in World War II where he served in the Army Air Corps. After the war they moved back to her hometown of Lafayette where they lived for the remainder of their lives. She was a high school teacher prior to her marriage but had worked at Purdue's Thermo-Physical Properties Research Center since 1946. She and her husband never had children but loved their numerous nephews and nieces.
