WEST FRANKFORT -- Ardis "Art" Smith, 79, passed away at 8:37 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at his residence. He was born May 7, 1932, in Herrin to Ardis and Stella (Stevenson) Smith.

He married Carolyn (Reiman) Smith on Dec. 12, 1953, in Murphysboro.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Smith of West Frankfort; a daughter, Susan Patton of West Frankfort; a son, Doug and wife, Tracy Smith, of Cumming, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jason and Ryan Patton and Mallory and Bryan Smith; a brother, Jim and wife, Alma Smith, of Memphis, Tenn.; a nephew, Dan; and a niece, Cindy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Greg Smith in 1977; and son-in-law, Spunky Patton.

He was a member of West Frankfort Rotary Club, West Frankfort Chamber of Commerce and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Benton. He served his country in the U.S. Army.

Art was very active in the community and was involved in both the West Frankfort Junior Football League and the Recreational Association.

He was the former manager of the WFRX Radio Station in West Frankfort and later a salesman for the station.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, in Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Roger Lyons officiating. There is no visitation and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery before the service.

Parker Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the West Frankfort Youth Football Program or the West Frankfort Recreation Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
