Dorothy Surwald Bosworth died Friday October 23 2009 as a result of a massive stroke suffered earlier in the week.

A native of Illinois and graduate of East St. Louis High School she worked at the Wabash Railroad Executive Offices in St. Louis until the birth of her children and served as a Stay-home Mom thereafter. When her sons were older she returned to Southern Illinois University to complete a B.A. in Sociology an M.S. in History and a Post-Graduate Education Specialist Certificate in Psychology/Counseling. Honored repeatedly by the U.S. Air Force Army and Navy and a recipient of the Belleville News Democrat Salute to Women Award (1987) she spent her professional career of over 25 years at OFallon High School as a teacher guidance counselor faculty sponsor of both the National Honor Society and the Class of 1976 Social Studies Department Chair Curriculum Advisor and Graduation Director.

Affectionately known as Mrs. B to thousands of teen-agers and adults she initiated and developed countless programs for students and teachers alike. A sought-after lecturer and consultant she was OTHSs and St. Clair Countys Teacher of the Year (1973) a member of the American Psychological Association the Illinois Guidance and Personnel Association the Illinois Association of College Admissions Counselors Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society Belleville Area College Advisory Board the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile of Ainad Temple was the only woman on the Board that incorporated the City of Fairview Heights and author of The Rediscovery of Latin America as a Catholic Mission Field. In retirement she and Mr. B moved to Lexington KY where she grandmothered her sons children and worked occasionally as a substitute teacher until 2008. A faithful Christian she taught Sunday School led youth groups a contributor to The Baptist Hymnal a member of Southland Christian Church Lexington KY and former member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ East St. Louis IL. Well done thou good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21)

Mrs. B was preceded in death by her parents Casper E. and Pauline Z. Surwald of East St. Louis IL and her husband of 52 years Robert W. Bosworth Sr. also of East St. Louis IL and Lexington KY. She is survived by her two sons The Rev. Robert W. Bosworth Jr. and his wife Bettie of Frankfort KY and their son Robert III her son Timothy J. Bosworth and his wife Debbie of Lexington KY and their children Katie and Marcie her brother Harry Surwald and his wife Delores of Westerville OH.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions will be graciously received by Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd St. Louis MO 63131. Visitation: Friends may call from 5:00PM-8:00PM on Monday October 26 2009 at Kassly Mortuary Fairview Heights IL and from 9:30AM-10:45AM on Tuesday October 27 2009 at Immanuel United Church of Christ East St. Louis IL. Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday October 27 2009 at Immanuel United Church of Christ East St. Louis IL with a reception to follow in the Church Hall.
