BIG STONE GAP, Va. - America Elizabeth Crawford Maxfield passed away Monday (Feb. 26, 2007) at her home.

She was born in Middlesboro, Ky., but lived in Big Stone Gap most of her life. She was a member of East Stone Gap Baptist Church and the East Stone Gap Baptist WMU. She was also a member of the Lonesome Pine Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Clyde Maxfield (Oct. 26, 2002); her parents, John and Bessie Francis (Martin) Crawford; five brothers, Leonard, Martin and Sam Crawford, John and Dewey Atchley; one sister, Gilberta Crawford Moore.

Surviving are five daughters and three sons-in-law, Joyce Maxfield Page and husband, George, Doris Maxfield McDaniel and Janice Maxfield Duncan and husband, Thomas, all of Big Stone Gap, Patricia Maxfield Clifton and husband, Rick, of Austin, Tex., and Lenora Smart Knox of Lapeer, Mich.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friend of the family, Homer Maynard; and wonderful caregivers, Mildred McKinney, Agnes McConnell, and Virginia and Whitney Lawson.

Calling hours are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.

Services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Lonnie Brooks and the Rev. Bobby Hamilton officiating.

Committal services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glencoe Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go in procession.

Pallbearers will be George Polly, Homer Maynard, Don Ferrell, Mike McConnell, Ralph Witt and Richard "Bud" Fannon.

Holding Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
