John Henry Vallentine was born on 6th of December 1840 in Rockbridge, Greene County, Ill ( Town 10 Range 10). He was the first child of 6 born of James M Vallentine and Martha (Vanarsdale). John was in command of the Yates Guard, a company of militia that was in organization since the outbreak of the war, a portion of the company went with him into 100 days of service, joining the 133rd Regiment, where John received the commission as a 1st Lieutenant.
He married Susan B Ryan, daughter of W.E Ryan on June 20th, 1866.
