Martha Lena Cornellisson was born on Jun 14, 1884 in Kansas, to Tresea Rose Mueller and William Cornellisson. In 1890, her father died. Her mother married Philip Ackerman two years later in 1892 and a year later, they had a son, Leo. In 1902, when Martha was 18, she gave birth to a daughter, Thresia Agnes. The father was thought to be the husband of an aunt. Because she wasn't married, it was decided that Martha and the baby would live with her mother, step-father and half-brother Leo. In 1911, when Martha was 27, she gave birth to a daughter, Margurette. The father was her 18-year-old half-brother Leo, and as a result of the scandal, Martha and baby Margurette moved to Michigan. Soon after arriving in Michigan, Martha married Ezra Dunn, 19 years her senior. From their union, Julia was born in 1913, followed by Laura in 1915, Erma in 1918, Theodore (Ted) in 1920, Mary in 1922, Edna in 1923, Paul in 1925, who died shortly after birth from an infected navel, and finally Joseph (Joe) in 1927. Often Martha was the sole custodial parent as Ezra reportedly disappeared for months at a time. Martha took in laundry and boarders to make ends meet, but times were hard and the family had to rely partially on welfare. In 1927, 5-year-old Mary fell victim to diptheria and the family, quarentined in the house, was not able to be there for her burial. Later in life, Martha became diabetic and at age 61 had to have her leg amputated due to gangrene. She never regained consciousness and died on April 21, 1946.
