James' family was living in Clarinda, Iowa at the time of his birth, but his mother was on a train to her mother's at the time of his birth, so she got off the train in Villisica to give birth to him. James quit school after the 8th grade to help his parents run their farm. He helped put Harry, his brother, through school. James wanted to be a doctor and one of his grandmothers tried to get him to go back to school telling him she would finance his education, but he was too proud to let her put out all that money for him. He loved woodworking and gardening. He was employed as a millman.
After the World War II he returned to his regular millwork at the Blackstone Planing Mill. He always had a garden with many vegetables and many fruit trees, on some of which he grafted different varieties. When he retired, he built a home in Cayucos, California, overlooking the ocean. He lived to enjoy it for 4 years and then died of a stroke.
James married Lazetta "Inez" Haydock on 24 December 1926. Inez was born on 3 September 1908 in Fresno, and died on 23 July 1992 in Freson. She was the daughter of Wray Nathan Haydock Sr. and Lida Amelia Fleming.
The daughter of James Dunlap and Lazetta Haydock was:
1. Helen Marie Dunlap (1934-2014) (James Thomas Dick)
