Thomas Jefferson Walters was probably born in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He is listed there in the 1850 census. His parents were Thomas Walters and Martha Jane Hagler. Between 1855 and 1860 they moved to Arkansas County, Arkansas, where Thomas lived the rest of his life.

On 10 Jan 1872, Thomas married Martha Skipper. They had four children before she passed away.

Some time after Martha's death, Thomas married a widow, Viola Van Camp Boyd. Two children were born into this marriage.

Thomas then married Amanda Yelverton. They also had two children. Amanda died of tuberculosis when her children were young.

After the death of Amanda, Thomas married another widow, Susan Montgomery Cooper. No children came to this marriage.

Thomas' final marriage took place in 1904, when he married Emma Hargrave. Emma outlived Thomas.

Thomas was a farmer, and active in the Hagler community. He was a founding member of the Hagler Baptist Church, and a deacon there.

In 1926, Thomas went to Little Rock to have surgery on an enlarged prostate. He did not survive the surgery He was buried on his farm, next to his mother, and at least one of his wives.
