James was born in 1760 in Ireland to William and Agnes Stevenson. He married Jane Caughey in Ireland (on 13 Jul 1782 according to grave memorial) and had 5 children in Ireland - James, William, Mary, Agnes, and Elizabeth. In 1790 the family immigrated to colonial Pennsylvania, Chester County and by 1797 they had moved to Westmoreland County and subsequently settling in Mercer County. Two more sons we born in Pennsylvania, John and Findley. James was the first blacksmith in the Mercer County area, and also made the first grist mill. James died in 1817*.
