Helen was born September 14, 1931 at Glen Morgan, West Virginia. Parents were George and Crystal (Martin) Underwood.
Helen spent her childhood in Thurmond, WV where she met and married Thomas E. Ballengee, Jr. Three sons were born of this union. They lived in Greenbrier County where Helen was employed as a purchasing agent for Greenbrier Valley Hospital. Thomas preceded her in death in 1971. Helen was later employed as a correctional officer at the Federal Reformatory for Women in Alderson, WV where she met and married Lyle "Red" Howell. They moved to Coffey County Kansas where she was employed by Wolf Creek Generating Station. They returned to Lewisburg, WV where Red preceded her in death in 1988. Helen returned to Kansas in 2006 to be closer to her son, Terry. Helen had been a resident of Sunset Manor of Waverly Kansas for two and a half years. Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ronceverte and a member of the New Strawn Fire Department Auxiliary.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
Helen is survived by her three sons:
Nine Grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Three brothers and four sisters.
Memorial Service is planned for Saturday July 23, 2011 at 1 pm at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg with Rev. Dr. Joseph Kenaston officiating. Private interment at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery will follow the Memorial Service.
