Joan Shirley Gilderman, 79, of Proctor, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, in Miller Dwan Medical Center.

Joan was born in Duluth on Oct. 4, 1931, to Armand and Mary (Gibson) Foucault. She was orphaned at age 7 and was adopted by Alfred and Malvina Malmstein. She graduated from Proctor High School and was soon married to the love of her life, Charles Gilderman, on Oct. 7, 1950. To this union seven children were born.

Joan spent the next many years raising her family and working at several area businesses. Her primary job was as a homemaker, and there was none better. Along with being very active in her kids sporting activities, she was a den mother for the cub scouts.

Joan loved to spend time playing bingo at the West Duluth American Legion, painting, sewing and knitting as well as making pine needle baskets. She especially enjoyed fishing off the dock at Lake Nichols. Chuck and Joan wintered in El Jobean, Fla., for many years.

Joan was a highly regarded woman with tremendous integrity. Her warm personality and kind heart will be greatly missed. She was known by many as the nicest person they ever met.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her biological and adoptive parents; her daughter in-law, Penny; her granddaughter, Annie; and her nephew, Bobby Gilderman.

Joan is survived by seven children, Charles "Chuck" (Candy), Dan (Sunny), Kerry (Kathy), Diane (Dave) Bell, Brian (Patsy), Jill Gilderman and Glen (Terrie); 17 grandchildren, Amy, Kory, Gina, Sarah, Mathew, Angela, Bailey, Jon, Adam, Ryan, Amber, Amanda, Cody, Nichole, Allison, Katie and Boston; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Marilyn Curtician of Greenville, Pa., Darlene (Russ) Godbout of Carlton, Gene (Gerrie) Smith of Munger, Richard (Gayle) Malmstein of Proctor and Bev (Randy) Janke of Alborn; brother-in-law Art (Lil) Gilderman; special friend Dave Denzler; good friend and neighbor Marilyn Tygart; as well as many other family members and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Miller Dwan ICU, especially PA Chris Sutton, who provided exemplary care for our mom. Special thanks to Pastor Pamela Barbour, who brought peace to our mom at this difficult time.
