Jesse "Charles E." Coffey, a native of San Diego was born on May l5, l928. He was one of four children born to Mattie Adelina Smith Coffey and Gilbert William Coffey. Jesse accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a very early age.

Jesse received his formal education through the San Diego Unified School District. He attended Lincoln Elementary, Sherman Elementary and Memorial Junior High School. He graduated from San Diego High School in 1946. Jesse was well known for his outstanding football achievements while attending San Diego High. Following high school he attended San Diego Community College.

In 1948, Jesse enlisted into the U.S. Air Force. He served his country for four years and received an honorable discharge in 1952. From 1952 to 1958, Jesse played professional basketball with the world renowned Harlem Globetrotters. He was a lifetime member of the Globetrotters.

Jesse was employed at North Island Aviation Depot as an Electronic System Mechanic and retired after thirty years of dedicated service.

As a youth, Jesse attended Jackson Memorial Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of the late Elder James A. Jackson. He was active in all youth activities of the church. He joined Calvary Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Dr. S. M. Lockridge, in his early young adult life where he remained a faithful member until his demise. He served in many auxiliaries of the church including the Deacon Ministries, Sanctuary Choir, as a Sunday School teacher and parking lot attendant. Jesse had a special love for preparing and assisting in the Baptismal Services and preparing and serving meals to bereaved families.

"Charlie" was a mentor to many young men in his community. He inspired several to follow into professional sports. His love for children was evidenced throughout his life. The San Diego community and the Calvary Baptist Church family will miss his friendly personality, his loving and caring spirit toward his fellow man and his warm and delightful sense of humor.

On Friday, October 17, 2003, a life well spent came to an end at approximately 9:30 A.M. in a local hospital after a two year battle with cancer. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and Gilbert Coffey; his sister, Susietta Coffey and one brother, Hilbert Coffey.

Jesse is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Austin Coffey and Virginia Lester Coffey of San Diego, California; two nephews, Louis Coffey of San Diego, California and Lawrence Coffey of Los Angeles, California; a host of cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.
