John Mercer Gilreath, son of John Kennedy Gilreath Jr. and Maybelle Allston Hethington (Gilreath Agee), was born and grew up in Charleston, SC. He was a member of St. Andrew's Parish Episcopal Church, the Sons of the Confederacy, The Carolina Yacht Club, the Charleston Country Club, and a life member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. He attended Camden Military Academy, Porter Military Academy, and The Citadel. After receiving an Engineering Degree from the University of South Carolina, he entered the US Air Force and served during the Vietnam War through the Gulf War. Being decorated with many medals and commendations, he
rose through the ranks and retired a Lt. Colonel. He had three girls with Yvonne Carnice Groves and the family moved all over the world, including Ohio, Montana, South Carolina, the Philippines, and Germany. They enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, Russia, Asia, and The Middle East. Family and friends called him Jack or Jackie, and he was interested in woodworking, camping, traveling, and fishing. He spent many of his last years in the Seattle/Tacoma, Washington area where he was able to pursue his love of fishing, especially salmon in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Jack is survived by two daughters: Yvonne Allston Gilreath of Charleston,SC,; Denise Groves Gilreath of Summerville, SC; and four grandsons: Christopher Daniel Nicholson, William Andrew Nicholson, Kevin McMillan Graham, and Ryan Gilreath Graham (all Denise's sons).
John Mercer Gilreath also has a marker at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. Far left side of the cemetery, just beyond a brick wall, on the left of path (section: C2, grave: 278).
