William S. Jones Sr. never used his middle name during his life time and neither his birth, baptism, death, nor obituary deviate beyond the initial "S." The same applies to his son, William S. Jones, Jr.

He is called "William Stephen Jones" in a 2003 biography of his accomplished son, Herschel V. Jones (1861-1928), no source cited, which became the initial basis for this memorial and subsequent references by others, including certified applications to the Society of Mayflower Descendants, etc.(1) In 2018, a discovery of a cache of family genealogical documents from three different sources, including the wife of William S. Jones, at different times early in the 20th C., now in the collection of this memorial creator, indicates his name was "William Steuben Jones," clearly the namesake of his maternal grandfather, William Steuben Taylor [1785-1861].(2, 3, 4)
