Served in Civil War in 3 mos. 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, Battery F as a private. Enlisted June 21, 1861. Discharged July 27, 1861. His obituary appeared in the April 28, 1909 issue of the The Press(Cleveland, OH): "FORMER FEDERAL OFFICER AND WAR VETERAN IS DEAD. Capt. Gary, Ex-Collector of Customs and Aid to Gen. Harrrison, Expires. Capt. Marco B. Gary civil war veteran and former collector of customs here, died Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at his home, 6521 Hough-av(sic), from heart failure. He was 77 and had been ill several months. Gary, a lawyer by profession, served on the staff of Gen. Ben Harrison during the rebellion. When the latter became president he appointed Gary to the custom collectorship at this port. The deceased is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J.D. Cockroft of Northport, N.Y., and by a son, W.M. Gary of Cleveland."
