William B. Rutledge
William Blackhorn Rutledge was born in New Salem, Ill., November 29, 1826, and died at the family home in Glasco, Kansas, July 29, 1917 at the age of 60 years, 7 months and 26 days.
He was united in marriage to Olive C. Bennett April 8, 1852, to which union five children were born. The two older ones having preceded him in death, also his wife who died December 23, 1912. The other three are Mrs. Florence Biggs of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Mary Copeland and Mrs. Ella Whalan of Glasco, Kansas. He leaves 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren to mourn his loss.
He came to Kansas in 1870 and took a homestead north of Glasco. The family came in 1872. He enlisted in the army at Birmington, Iowa in August, 1863 in Co. C., 8th Iowa Cavalry. His service was mostly in Tennessee. He was mustered out February 1964 and appointed Deputy U.S. Marshall under Lincoln's administration. He was personally acquainted with Lincoln, the latter then running a store at Salem, Ill. and boarding in the Rutledge home, where he met Ann Rutledge, to whom he afterward became engaged in marriage, but was broken up by Ann's death.
It is worthy of note that the deceased was a relative of J. Rutledge of South Carolina, and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Mr. Rutledge was raised in the belief of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, but in his later days he meditated much upon the Christian Church.

Rutledge enlisted as a private in Company C, 8th Iowa Cavalry on July 29, 1863. He was discharged December 12, 1863 to accept a promotion in the Provost Marshal's Department. No information about his service with the Provost Marshal's Department, including his date of discharge, has been located.
