Maren was the youngest daughter of Marthinus Jensen Fonnesbeck and Laurentine Enevoldsen. She came here as an infant with her mother a few months afer her birth in 1892 to join her father and siblings who were homesteading in Utah and Idaho. During the voyage, Laurentine was so ill she could not nurse Maren, so she was given strips of raw beefsteak to suck. Both she and her mother survived.

She married Leo Wilford Johnson in 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Their children are:
Elma Maurine b. 1914 (m. Lorenzo Hansen),
Gordon b. 1915 - died in infancy,
Leola Marentine b. 1916 (m. Joseph D. Ericksen),
Laura Margaret b. 1918 (m. Herbert. A. Newey),
and
Edna Marcia b. 1919 (m. Raleigh S. South)
