Julius was the son of Charles and Emma Fankhauser of rural Greenwood County, Kansas. Julius grew up on the family farm. His siblings were Zella, Jesse, George, Lois and Cora. Julius worked on the farm and in the oil fields in Greenwood County, Kansas until the mid 1950's, when he relocated in California with his children Kenneth, Jeanine and Michael.
He married Zylpha Arline Berry in 1902 in Kansas.
There children were Betty, John, Nelda, Larry, Ken, Caralee, Jeanine and Michael.
Zylpha divorced Julius in 1953. She then remarried, Her second husband was Charles Bracken of Eldorado, Kansas.
Julius remarried in California, marrying Genevieve Hostetler in 1963. Julius in his final years lived and died in Seal Beach, California.
