World War I French Army General. He rose to command the French 5th Army during World War I in 1914 and directed it at the Battle of the Marne. He later commanded the French Eastern Army Group in 1916, the Northern Army Group in 1917. After his forces were defeated in May 1918 at the Third Battle of the Aisne, he was placed at the head of the Allied Army of the Orient, commanding an army that consisted of French, British, Greek, Serbian and Italian troops. His offensive in Macedonia and subsequent successes on the Southern front, coupled with gains in France that began with participation of the United States, helped bring about the Armistice in November 1918. He was made a Marshal of France in 1921.
