After Ernest's mother died, his father moved to Kansas to stay with Ernest's older married sister. Ernest remained to be raised by his other married sister, Alice McKernan in Ruth, White Pine County. Ernest followed the rugged life that existed in the wild mining days of Nevada. He tried his hand at many occupations including mining and as a ranchhand.
In 1895 Ernest went to a dance in Pioche, Lincoln County, Nevada and met a young girl named Lillie Hammond from the neighboring town of Eagle Valley (now Ursine). They were married January 16, 1896. They had one daughter, Selina Ernitta Randall. Because of his job as a miner he had to leave to follow the latest mine location. Lillie and the baby stayed back with Lillie's parents. Ernest never returned and he never remarried.
Ernest remained in the White Pine County area for the rest of his life. He died July 1st, 1944 in Ruth and is buried in Ely.
