John D. Byrnes Sr. of Evanston, a former resident of Wilmette from 1959 until 2000, died July 31 at Evanston Hospital. He was 85.
Mr. Byrnes, also known as "Jack," was a successful business executive who enjoyed a 43-year career with IBM.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Byrnes was an avid golfer who divided his retirement years between his home in Boynton Beach, Fla., and Bellaire, Mich. His happiest moments were spent taking in the view of Torch Lake, Mich., surrounded by his family.
He was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Church in Northfield.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Patricia; daughters Mary Beth (John) Gilbert of Fort Wayne, Ind., Diane (Bill) Rasmussen) of Omaha and Tricia (Joe) Durkin of Western Springs, Ill.; sons John (Karen) of Northfield; Mike (Kay) of Weston, Ky., Don (Laura) of Sudbury, Mass., Larry (Barb) of Pittsburgh and Terry (Jackie) of Mound, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 3 at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Northfield, with interment in Bellaire, Mich.
