Rounsevell Mortuary records of Lead state that Alice Lea Gaines of 512 Sawyer Street in Lead died June 11, 1917 at the age of 2 years 2 months of pneumonia, measles and whooping cough; born in Lead on April 11, 1915; father - Cyril Gaines, born South Dakota; mother - Bernice Valiant, born Wisc.; buried in the Catholic Cemetery on June 14, 1917.

Lead Daily Call newspaper, June 12, 1917 - "Alice Ida Gains, the 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Gains, 512 Sawyer street, passed away at 9 o'clock last night. Two months ago she became ill with whooping cough, followed by measles, from which pneumonia developed. She leaves besides her parents, a 4-year-old sister. Her grandparents, residents of Philip, S.D., arrived today. The funeral will take place Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from St. Patrick's cathedral."

Lead Daily Call, June 13, 1917 - "Funeral services for little Alice Gains will be held at 10 o'clock Thursday morning from St. Patrick's cathedral instead of Saturday as announced yesterday. Burial in Calvary cemetery."
