Obituary:
RIVERBOAT SKIPPER DEAD AT 78
Published: Tuesday, 18 Oct 1966, Charleston Gazette

Huntington -- Jerome C. Childers, a lifelong riverboat captain who last was in charge of the West Virginia state showboat, Rhododendron, died Monday in Cabell-Huntington Hospital here at the age of 78.

He was almost as well known as a painter of riverboats, and 21 of his paintings form a permanent display in the First National Bank of Louisville, Ky.

He was born at Scott Depot, Putnam County, in 1887. His father, a construction worker, was killed four years later when struck by a piece of falling equipment in a cofferdam during construction of old Lock Seven on Kanawha River.

When he was 16 years old, the young Childers quit school because his teacher whipped him for spending too much time drawing pictures. He signed on as a dishwasher on the packet boat Evergreen which made daily trips between Charleston and Winfield. He spent the rest of his life on riverboats -- most of it as a captain.

He also turned his artistic inclinations to a specialty in painting riverboats. He said he painted more than 500 of them in his lifetime, and sold most for at least $100 each. He once painted 21 different Southern cotton carriers and passenger packets for a permanent display at the Louisville bank.

Since leaving the job with the Rhododendron, Capt. Childers had been living at 3129 Brandon Rd. in Huntington. He was a member of the Huntington Baptist Temple. His only survivors are a nephew and two nieces.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Poca Baptist Church, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston. The body is at Gatens Funeral Home at Poca and will be taken to the church an hour before the service.
