Anthony Evan Roberts was born on 27 May 1831 in Michaelstone Super Avon, Glamorgan, Wales. He was the son of Richard Roberts, a cordwainer, and Elizabeth Evans. On 6 Oct 1857 in Michaelstone Super Avon, Glamorgan, Wales he married his first wife, Elizabeth Evans, by whom he had five children. She died in 1868 and he remarried to Mary Ann (Morgan) Adams on 30 Nov 1868 in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales. Anthony practiced the trade of his father as a young man, but by 1857 was an engine fitter. He removed to Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales around 1860 and by 1887 removed to Canton, Glamorgan, Wales. In June of 1894 Anthony Evan Roberts was selected as one of ten candidates out of a pool of 136 applicants for four Engine Fitter positions at the Cardiff Corporation Electricity Works. He was talented enough to be voted 5th in the preliminary round, but was not appointed to one of the four positions. Anthony died in Canton on 12 Jan 1911 and is buried in Cathays Cemetery with his wife, Mary Ann, and his granddaughter, Gertrude Lilian Roberts.
