Los Angeles Times – May 16 1909:

DEATH OF MINISTER

Veterans of Civil War Honor Their Comrade as He is Laid to Rest in Rosedale

Rev. Ferdinand Werth, who died in this city on Tuesday last, and whose funeral was held Thursday, was a resident of California for thirty years. He came to Los Angeles as pastor of the German Methodist Church, at Pico and San Julian streets, but thirteen years ago was compelled to retire on account of failing health, since which time he has lived quietly at his home in this city.

He was a soldier in the Civil War, serving in the Seventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and after his discharge entered Wallace College, at Berea, O., and fitted himself for the ministry. After serving churches in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, he removed to San José, this State, thence to San Francisco, San Diego, and finally Los Angeles.

In his later years, Rev. Werth used his talent as a singer to advantage as an evangelist, and he had been invited to sing at the Memorial Day exercises in the Auditorium, two weeks hence, and had decided to sing "The Roll Call." He leaves a widow and a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Werth-Fruhling, in this city.

The funeral was held at the German Methodist Church, the services being conducted by Rev. Emil Burbahan, assisted by Rev. Otto Wilke and Rev. E. Funk, Bartlett Logan Post, G.A.R.; the Veterans' Drum Corps and the Daughters of Veterans attended the funeral and gave the departed military burial at Rosedale Cemetery.
