Loved Young Woman Dies - Evelyn Bengtson Loses Fight With White Plague; Funeral Services Friday
This community was saddened Tuesday when word was circulated in the city of the death just before noon of Miss Evelyn Bengtson, daughter of Sheriff and Mrs. John Bengtson, at Fair Oaks Lodge Sanatorium. Death was caused by tuberculosis which developed following an attack of pneumonia in January of last year. The young lady had been home for the summer but during the winter months had been confined at the sanatorium for treatment.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Congregational church. The officiating pastor will be the Rev. J.E. Jansen of the local church. Interment will be made at the cemetery here.
Emma Evelyn Bengtson was born in Sebeka July 20, 1908. She came with her parents to this city ten years ago and here she grew and blossomed into beautiful young womanhood. Attending the local public and grade and high schools, she was graduated in from the latter as a member of the class of 1927. Determining on nursing as a career, she entered the St. Luke's Hospital Training School for Nurses in Chicago and when she was taken ill and was forced to return to her home here, she had only seven more months to serve before becoming a graduate nurse. For about two and one-half years she continued her studies and training and as usual in her school work, she stood well to the fore of her class.
Besides her sorrowing father and mother, she is survived by two brothers, Arvid of Sebeka, and David at home, and four sister, Mrs. Carl Astrum of Ah Gwah Ching and Eva, Vera and Helen, living at home.
Always of a lovable and cheerful nature, her smiling disposition won for her the esteem and affection of her fellow students. Throughout her high school years, she was a leader among the students, popular, and with a fine sense of responsibility as evidenced by her excellent marks and work in extra-curricular activities. She was a member of the Congregational church and choir where she continued her influence for greater good. Her death leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
