Gerald "Jerry" J. Angood Jr., age 85, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. He was born Dec. 9, 1925, in Newton. He was raised and lived in Pratt his whole life.
He served in the US Navy during World War II and was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Pearl Harbor. During that time, he created the cartoon "Salty Doc" that was used in Navy publications.
Returning from the war in 1947, he started work with Pratt Glass Co. He remained there for 50 years.
He was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was an artist, cartoonist, and sign painter. He was Santa Claus, an MDA clown, and Sunday School teacher. He was a bowling enthusiast, wrestling advisor, and baseball umpire.
He was a community volunteer, a mentor to many, and a servant to all. He was involved with many organizations and received many awards. His greatest reward was the joy he saw in peoples' faces. He was a man with many hats and he leaves some big shoes to fill.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father. Gerald J. Angood Sr.; mother, Leah Lippincott; a brother Donald "Jack" Angood; two sisters, Anne Braden and Mary Kanady; and a stepdaughter, Kelly Belcher.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Lehman) Angood; a son, Jay Angood of Pratt; two daughters, Gayle Bridgeman and Nancy Nimz both of Dallas, Texas; three stepchildren, Shelly Seba of Pratt, Carrie Nemecheck of Tribune, and Jaimey Howell of Fort Smith, Ark.; a brother, Robert Lippincott of Grand Saline, Texas; three sisters, Rita Adams of Albuquerque, N.M., Linda Talbott of Wichita, and Patricia Angood of Newton; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Pratt. Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
